About Cape Verde
At the crossroads of the three continents bordering the Atlantic Ocean there is a small paradise called Cape Verde. Located 500 km off the West African Coast and 16 degrees above the Equator line, the Republic of Cape Verde is composed of 10 islands (of which one is uninhabited) and 8 islets—all of volcanic origin.
Cape Verde was discovered by the Portuguese in the 15th century, and was quickly absorbed as a Portuguese colony, remaining so for several centuries, until July 5th 1975 when it became independent from Portugal. Cape Verde´s capital is Praia.
The country has a total area of 4,033 sq km and a population of 426,998. With a history of emigration, today there are more Cape Verdeans living abroad than on the archipelago. Portuguese remains the official language, while Crioulo (a dialect derived from African languages and Portuguese) is spoken throughout the country.
